Catalytic transformation of carbohydrates and lignin in ionic liquids

چکیده

Ionic liquids with anions of strong hydrogen-bond basicity have been broadly reported in the literature as effective solvents for the dissolution of the components of lignocellulosic biomass. The key attributes of various ionic liquids are reviewed with a focus on their structural and functional properties related to biomass dissolution capacity. A number of the most studied ionic liquids with high solubility for cellulose and lignin have often been found not suited for catalytic conversions of these biomass components. Metal chlorides in chloride-based ionic liquids are robust catalyst systems for efficient cellulose and lignin conversions. Emerging leads in the literature related to the use of ionic liquids for catalytic conversions of cellulose, cellulosic carbohydrates, and lignin are discussed. C © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Selective Breakdown of (Ligno)cellulose in Ionic Liquids

(Ligno)cellulose is mainly composed of cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, and extractives, which represents an abundant carbon-neutral renewable resource. Increasing concerns about global warming and diminishing fossil fuel reserves have stimulated much effort to use (ligno)cellulose as an alternative to petroleum for the production of fuels and chemicals. From a sustainability point of view, sh...

Room Temperature Synthesis of Mequinol by Using Ionic Liquids as Homogeneous Recyclable Catalysts

For the synthesis of Mequinol (4-methoxy phenol), two acidic ionic liquids based on imidazolium cation (BMSIL and IMSIL) synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and CHNS analyses. Tan, the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation of para-anisaldehyde was studied with these ionic liquids, as the catalysts. The results showed that the BMSIL with more Brønsted acidic functions had higher c...

Towards Rational Design of Nanoparticle Catalysis in Ionic Liquids

This feature article introduces the strategies on the design of highly efficient nanoparticle (NP) catalytic systems in ionic liquids (ILs). The employment of functional ILs as the media for NP preparation and catalysis could prove advantageous in terms of enhancing both NP stability and catalytic activity. Hydroxyl group functionalized ILs, in particular, exhibited a remarkable promotion effec...

H-imidazolium Acidic Ionic Liquids as Efficient Catalysts in the Synthesis of Xanthenes under Solvent-Free Conditions

Bifunctional acidic ionic liquids, having both H-imidazolium and -SO3H groups as cation moieties (H-BFAILs) and CF3SO3- as anion, were synthesized in high yields. These H-BFAILs showed significant hydrophilic properties, lower acidity and higher thermal stability relative to common ionic liquids, due to their unique structures. The (propyl or butyl-3-sulfonic) imidazolium trifluoromethane sulfo...

Catalytic conversion of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by germanium(IV) chloride in ionic liquids.

Direct conversion of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) catalyzed by germanium(IV) chloride in ionic liquids has been investigated in search of an efficient and environmentally friendly process. Monosaccharides D-fructose and D-glucose, disaccharides sucrose and maltose, and even the polysaccharide cellulose were successfully converted into HMF with good yields under mild conditio...
